Reactions: Compelling and fun, provocative
Where to watch: Hulu
I love animated shows but I’ve never been a huge fan of the traditional anime narrative or animation style. Lazarus is a nice evolution of both the traditional visual and storytelling style, while not totally departing from either. I really enjoyed this show, especially the “main character” Axel and his abilities.
The funny thing is, there are three shows currently called Lazarus out there on streaming right now. There’s this one, the animated show. There’s another one called The Lazarus Project, which was released in 2022 and 2023 but recently made its way to US streaming platforms (which I also loved for its fresh take on time travel). And there’s a third one that just released on Prime Video called Lazarus that seems to be a thriller (this is on my list of shows to watch).
Word to tv producers: Maybe retire the name Lazarus for all future productions.
Back to the animated Lazarus, if you’re into a slow build animated series about the end of the world, then I highly recommend this series. If you like top-notch animation and a hint of super powers, you’ll like enjoy it. And if you like end-of-days storylines, this show is for you.
Also, since I won’t write a separate review for The Lazarus Project, you should watch that too. The British sci-fi time travel show has two seasons and is really well written. I loved the way they use time travel, and the way it gets distorted and goes haywire. I highly recommend this one too.
