Reactions: Super cute! A fresh take on demon hunting
Where to watch: Netflix
I wasn’t really sure I wanted to give Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld a try, but I’m glad I did. The first episode took some getting used to, probably because I was expecting something more like KPop Demon Hunters. But this show if very different in tone and visual style, in lots of fun ways.
Jentry is a teenager whose parents died when she was young. She has powers that can vanquish demons from the underworld. She was raised by her great-aunt Gugu, who is also a skilled Daoist priestess with badass skills. The story threads together really neat Chinese demon mythology and typical teenager struggles (which boy should she fall for – the cute good guy or the bad boy?).
There are lots of familiar voices. Jentry is voiced by Ali Wong and her demon sidekick is voiced by Bowen Yang. Lucy Liu and Lori Tan Chinn are also among the voice cast.
Overall I loved this show. It was fresh, compelling, and fun. If you liked KPop Demon Hunters, I bet you’ll like Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld too.
