Reactions: Fucking adorable
Where to watch: Netflix
This was a rewatch for me because I love this show. I love how beautifully it weaves a story of best friends, strong magical women, old gods, an evil witch, a coming out story, young gay love, rejection, and more. And it ends with the group of friends being even stronger in their connections than before.
Also, please see my previous review about The Sandman to read my rant against Gaiman.
If you need convincing to watch Dead Boy Detectives, here’s my pitch: Imagine Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Scooby Doo. Two teenage boy ghosts (Edwin and Charles) solve ghost crimes. They befriend a psychic (Crystal Palace) who is battling a demon boy who had previously taken control of her and wants back in. In battling him, the psychic taps into her ancestral powers. The trio befriends a neighbor (Niko) who is possessed by sprites. They do battle with a centuries-old witch named Esther (potentially the best character in the series). Edwin catches the eye of a salacious Cat King (played by the sexy Lukas Gage). All the while, they solve ghost mystery cases and try to avoid getting sent to their own afterlifes.
The show also cleverly weaves together the world of the Endless, with Death and Despair both making cameos. And, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention how cute and funny the writing is. The content gets pretty dark, but the tone is still lighthearted and sentimental.
If you haven’t already, go watch Dead Boy Detectives. It’s lovely.
