Boy Kills World

Reactions: Whoa that’s a lot of blood.
Where to watch: Hulu

I’m pretty sure I started this movie a while back and turned it off, because the first several minutes were eerily familiar. And I’m going to take a wild guess that I shut it off because of the gratuitous violence and blood shed. But, I’m glad I gave it another shot recently because it’s a clever take on a video-game-inspired movie.

Let me be clear, Boy Kills World isn’t directly based on any one video game. I’d argue it’s better because of that. It’s more loosely inspired by the street fighting video game genre. The overarching plot follows the main character who must kill the evil regime leaders for killing his family. It bounces from backstory to big group fight scenes to big boss fights and more. Even Bill Skarsgård’s fighting stance and superhuman moves are straight out of any number of video game sequences. It’s a lot of fun to watch!

I also oddly loved the fact that Boy (Bill’s character) is mute and deaf, because it provides the opportunity for first person narration from inside Boy’s head. The narration monologue is hilarious. Also, mad props to Bill Skarsgård for acting the hell out of that role without uttering a word.

Boy Kills World is riotously funny but also really dark. The comedic layer they’ve added to the blood and violence makes it more interesting story. Although, trigger warning, there is a lot of blood and death. Be prepared.

I started Boy Kills World with zero intention of enjoying it or even paying it much attention. It was going to be background noise one lazy evening. But I ended up loving it. If you can stomach the violence, the comedic elements and plots twists are totally worth it.
