Reactions: This show just keeps on getting better
Where to watch: HBO Max
I didn’t watch Hacks Season 4 right away. Honestly, I wasn’t convinced they could pull off a fourth season of fresh, funny content and storyline. But damn, was I wrong. I’d go so far as to say this was my favorite season yet.
The show starts off with Ava blackmailing her way into the head writer position of Deborah’s Late Night show. Deborah does not take kindly to this and makes Ava’s life a living hell. At this point I wasn’t sure I wanted to watch a full season of them sniping at each other. But that’s not what happens.
It’s remarkable how much the writers of Hacks were able to accomplish in just ten episodes. From discord, to fizzle, to success, to resolution, to a dramatic moral decision, to failure and retreat, to a glimmer of resurrection, this season covers a lot of ground.
I also loved the Jimmy and Kayla storyline. It’s nice to see these two supporting characters develop and have a continued place in the show.
Finally, just after I finished watching the fourth season, I also watched Hannah Einbinder (Ava) in her stand up special. I’m not usually much of a standup fan. But the standup comedians I do enjoy are always sardonic, slow paced, and smart af. Hannah is all those things and then some, and I found myself laughing out loud a ton. So, if you’re looking for something to tide you over until Season 5 of Hacks, go watch Hannah’s standup special on HBO Max.
