You Should Be So Lucky

Reactions: WHOA! Who knew LGBTQ+ romance novels could be THIS good?
Novel by Cat Sebastian

I was at Fabulosa Books in the Castro with a few minutes to spare before a dinner date. I asked the cashier/bookseller for some gay romance recommendations. after slogging through 1200 pages of a boring sci-fi epic, I needed something light and refreshing. He picked out You Should Be So Lucky and told me it gets a lot of positive reviews. Well, let me add another one to the mix!

You Should Be So Lucky is set in the 1960s. Normally I’d never pick up a period piece drama or romance. But there’s something clever about setting the story in that particular time. It creates a backdrop in which being in the closet was the societal norm. And therefore coming out can easily serve as the crux of the drama. There’s no need to rely on more deeply dramatic conflicts like drug use, infidelity, abuse, or trauma that you often see weaved into gay romance set in modern times.

Instead, it’s just a story about professional baseball player who knows he’s gay, having to hide his truth from the world. He has also recently been traded to a new team in a new city, and is not well liked by his teammates.

Enter the reporter who has been assigned to ghost write a “weekly diary” in the paper for the athlete. The reporter is gay, widowed, and hasn’t found his way back to living a normal life.

You can only imagine what happens next. A freaking adorable love story, that’s what! It was just so touching and special watching the two characters discover their feelings for each other. Author Cat Sebastian writes beautiful characters with real feelings and emotions that we can all relate to. When I was raving about the book to a few friends, I told them, “Even the supporting characters have character arcs and development!”

I could NOT put this book down and tore through it two days. I’ll be ordering the other books in this series that follow other characters from the story. I’ll say this, lesbian women sure do write gay male romance better than anyone!

Go read You Should Be So Lucky. It’s just lovely.
