Mythic Quest

Reactions: Clever, Fresh, LOL every episode
Where to watch: Apple TV+

My first thought after watching the pilot episode of Mythic Quest a few weeks ago was: HOW did Apple’s algorithm take this long to suggest this show to me? Their UI is so so so bad. My second thought: WOW.

The concept is fresh. The writing is superb. The characters are rich and complex. And best of all, the banter and dialogue is hilarious. I laughed out so many times. Clever. Fresh. Deep. Emotional.

But truly, here’s what sets this show about. The show starts out telling the story the some computer nerds behind the world’s most popular video game. And it’s excels. But between the first and second seasons, COVID lockdown struck. And they released two COVID episodes as in-betweeners. Right here. This is when the show becomes brilliant. I cried. Hard. The two leads struggle through COVID and then share a moment that I feel like so many of us will be able to relate to.

That tender moment sets up a relationship between the starkly different characters Poppi and Ian that initiates the narrative arc that underpins the next three seasons. Their ups and downs and adventures together are what sets the show apart from a typical comedy.

One other thing I loved about the show was their backstory episodes. Now usually I detest these types of filler episodes. But every single time Mythic Quest included one (and it might be about one per season), they were brilliant. Heart-warming. Beautiful. Again, another example of how well written this series is.

I was sad to see that the show got cancelled by Apple TV+. I blame Apple and its stupid UI for the show not being popular enough to stick around another season.

Fun trivia: The show was cancelled after the finale to Season 4 aired. Because the show left with a weird cliffhanger, Apple allowed the show’s writers to re-film an ending and replace Season 4’s final episode so that the show’s audiences are left with a more satisfying ending. Booo on Apple for cancelling the show, but Bravo for giving us an ending that didn’t suck.
