Reactions: Hilarious, fun, LOL
Where to watch: Hulu
There was a point where everything I was watching was so dark and horrific, that I needed a light-hearted, 25-minute pick-me-up before I went to bed each night. Which led me to stumble on Deli Boys, which fit the bill perfectly.
This is not a spoiler because it’s literally how the first five minutes of the series starts. An Indian man who has built an empire with his local Tri State Area ABC Delis, gets hit with a golf ball in the head while golfing with his sons, and he dies. Minutes later the FBI raids his properties and seizes all his assets. The adult sons suddenly learn that their dad’s business was all a front to sell cocaine. Five minutes. All that gets set up in five minutes of show. This is why I love 25-minute long episodes! They get the ball rolling and stuff actually happens!
This is essentially a mafia/gang/drug lords story, but executed in the most hilarious way. The brothers are a slapstick duo and they carry the show. They’re on screen relationship is gold. And their Aunty Lucky, played by Poorna Jagannathan, is so badass. (Side note: I’ve just started watching Never Have I Ever, starring her as well.) Finally, the FBI is presented in such a silly way, absolutely mocking the organization but in a tongue-and-cheek sort of way.
I also enjoyed seeing Indian and Pakastani culture represented in the show as natural backdrop. Very similar to how much Pakastani culture was effortlessly weaved into Ms. Marvel on Disney.
I really hope there’s a second season of Deli Boys. It’s fun and the characters are hilarious. Slight trigger warning: There are several shootings and murders. It’s not for the faintest of heart. But if you want a funny mob show that makes you laugh for 25 minutes at a time, then I recommend Deli Boys.
