Mickey 17

Reactions: Super fun, Fresh sci-fi, Campy
Where to watch: Theaters

Mickey 17 is fun. It’s different and fresh. I love when I get to see something that doesn’t feel like it’s been done 100 times already (enough with the reboots already!).

First of all, this was WAY more of a sci-fi movie than I expected from the trailer. It’s literally about humanity setting out into the cosmos to colonize other planets. That’s the backdrop. I won’t say too much more about the sci-fi elements because I really don’t want to spoil anything.

Robert Pattinson is brilliant. His ability to bring forward different versions of the same person, with slight variations, was superb. And it’s nice to see him play the nerd/weakling instead of an powerful jock wizard or a twinkly invincible vampire.

Other standout performances come from Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo. They add an element of over-the-top camp to the movie that makes it hilarious. In fact, their melodrama gives the movie a vibe that’s reminiscent of Starship Troopers.

Is this the best sci-fi movie ever made? Not even close. Is it an enjoyable, fresh entry into the sci-fi genre that’s been largely full of remakes and reboots? Absolutely.

I have a hunch you’ll enjoy this movie for what it is. I sure did. I recommend you watch Mickey 17.
