Kneecap

Where to watch: Netflix
Reactions: Fuck yes. Watch this movie!

My simple and clear imperative is: Go. Watch. This. Movie.

I had no idea what to expect when I started Kneecap. But it turned out to be, to my surprise and delight, a foreign language film. Most of the film is in Irish which was so freaking cool to me. The story revolves around a rap duo (a trio with their DJ) who use their vocal talents to promote the Irish language or Gaeilge. That’s all I really want to say about what the movie is about without major spoilers

The best part of the movie is for sure the music. I love grungy, dark, vibey, bass sounds in electronic music. Overlay that with some fucking awesome rap lyrics (with subtitles) and you have my full attention. Hearing this Irish rap music reminded me of how much Original Pirate Material captured my attention in the early 2000s. That’s not to say they’re the same type of music. But they both feel/felt so new and fresh to me, and I was bopping on the couch every time they dropped a rap track.

I will caution you that there is a lot of drug use and a few fairly graphic sex scenes too. But they’re not gratuitous. These scenes are intentional – they play a part in the plot. (Note: the visualizations of a ketamine trip are too fucking hilarious!)

I highly recommend this movie. There’s nothing quite like it and it’s so fucking badass.
