Creature Commandos

Reactions: Amused, Deja vu
Where to watch: Max

I enjoyed watching Creature Commandos. It’s acerbic and clever. There are several laugh-out-loud moments. Every line out of GI Robot’s mouth is perfection. There’s a lot to love in this animated show.

However. This just feels like James Gunn doing more James Gunn. It’s very one-trick-pony. Honestly the witty banter feels like more of the same from Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, Galaxy of the Guardians, and quite frankly, even the Scooby-Doo movies – all James Gunn creations. Which, if you love James Gunn, that’s great! More James Gunn content for you to consume and enjoy.

Even the plots and characters from all his creations start to blur together – the spunky, misunderstood, underdogs who rise above their reputations to save the day. I get it, bad guys can be good guys too! Goof balls can be heroes too! WE KNOW. You’ve made that point abundantly clear in all your superhero and “team” movies.

Look, James Gunn makes good stuff. This is good stuff. There’s nothing bad about it. But he has a style – clearly one he’s doubling, tripling, quadrupling down on. (Kinda like how every Joss Whedon show feels like a Joss Whedon show – no judgement I LOVE all of them).

Where I hesitate is that Mr. Gunn is now in charge of all DC storylines and characters and he is preparing to reboot many of them. And with his first big splash in remaking the universe, he’s shown us that we’re going to get more of his same style.

Which makes me worry about some of the bigger character reboots. Most notably Superman. Ugh, I really hope he doesn’t apply the same quick-talking, snarky repartee, and underdog-who-saves-the-day tropes to the Superman franchise. We’ve already seen that with Shazam and Green Lantern, and those movies just don’t carry the gravitas that those characters not only deserve but demand.
