Where to watch: Netflix
Reactions: Fun, Magical, Dark
Don’t let the somewhat juvenile animation style fool you: This show is dark and complex. You get: assassin elves, star-touch elves warring with arch-dragons, fire elves and their lesbian queen who marries a human, gay husband moonshadow elves who surrogate-raise one of the protagonists, dark magic, prophesying skywing elves who can never reveal their visions of the future, and so much more. There are certainly childish elements and storylines, especially in the first seasons. But as the show progresses, it gets much more complex as it deals with right and wrong, good and evil, death and destruction, and moral sacrifice.
My only complaint is the ending, which I will not reveal here so as to avoid spoilers. However, my preferred ending would have been: Callum sacrifices himself, turning to the dark side to cast the spell that imprisons Aravos in the coin. Then, Rayla makes the ultimate sacrifice and kills her beloved Callum to prevent him from being taken over by Aaravos. As she’s weeping over his dead body, Claudia returns and makes a speech about realizing the err of her ways and how she’ll never be good again. She then casts a spell to trade her life for Callum’s before his souls departs for the other side, choosing to be with her father and leaving this plane with no unfinished business. That’s ending I’m going to pretend happened instead of the silly ending they gave us.
